Mashrafe Mortaza Named In An FIR

cricketbuzztoday: Local media in Bangladesh has reported that after Shakib Ul Hassan, former Bangladesh Captain Mashrafee Mortaza has also been named in an FIR in Bangladesh charging him with violent attacks on students during recent riots in the country. Apart from Mashrafe his father, Ghulam Murtaza, has also been named in the same FIR in Narail Sadar Police Station.

Mashrafe Mortaza And Politics

Mashrafe, disheartened by the behavior of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials, joined the Awami League party in 2018. The Awami League is a political party in Bangladesh headed by recently self-exiled politician Sheikh Haseena Wajid.

Mashrafe contested the election and became a member of the parliament from the Narail 2 constituency in the December 2018 General Elections. The recent riots in Bangladesh are due to the political policies of Sheikh Haseena who fled the country amid turmoil.

After the exile of Sheikh Haseena Wajid, the Awami League’s parliamentary leaders and members are under severe criticism and accusations. The accusations haven’t spared Mashrafee Murtaza the former captain of Bangladesh’s team as well, subsequently named in an FIR.

Mashrafee has been named in another FIR at a local police station, filed by Sarwar Ghulam Chaudhry, former chairman of Sylhet Strikers in the Bangladesh Premier League. The FIR charges Mashrafee and five others of forcibly taking shares worth Tk 4.5 crore in the Bangladesh Premier League.

Protesters Attacked Mashrafee Murtaza’s House

After violent clashes between police and the general public, the charged mob attacked the house of Mashrafee Murtaza and set it on fire.

The violent protests across the country forced Prime Minister Haseen to resign. Apart from attacking Mashrafee’s house the people also targeted the houses of other leaders of the Awami League Party in the vicinity.

Cricket Career Of Mashrafee Murtaza

Mashrafee captained the national side in 117 matches across all formats. He was an allrounder who took 390 wickets and scored 2,955 runs in 220 ODIs, 36 Tests, and 54 T20Is. He garnered a lot of respect from the public as a cricketer, but not as a politician in the aftermath of recent protests.

FIR Against Shakib Ul Hassan

An FIR has been registered against 147 people including Masrafee and Shakib Ul Hassan, charging them of violence against peaceful protestors. Shakib’s case is a grave one as he has been charged in the FIR with the murder of a garment factory worker during the protest.

With political unrest in the country, the implications of star cricketers in murder and violence cast a shadow on the careers of these cricketers. The turmoil has also affected Bangladesh cricket in the country and how it is going to fare in the international circuit.
