IPL Auction 2025-New RTM And Retention Rules

In a meeting held between owners of IPL franchise owners and BCCI, modalities were discussed for the upcoming auction. The meeting primarily revolved around players’ retentions and the right-to-match options. Cricketbuzztoday has got you covered about all the meeting updates.

IPL 2025 is going to be a mega auction. Over the years divergent opinions have been given on the auction modalities. Some favours the existing rules while the majority want to get rid of them for a seamless IPL.

The meeting was held on Wednesday 31st July at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. Several issues were discussed. Let’s dwell on the key points discussed in the meeting.

KKR And SRH Favours High Retention

Cricbuzz reports that on Wednesday evening in the meeting, owners of KKR and SRH vehemently opposed the auction procedure for the upcoming auction.

It was also reported that there was a heated exchange of words between Shahrukh Khan (owner of KKR) and Ness Wadia (PBKS) on the players’ retention in teams. Ness Wadia is in favour of player retention while ShahruKh seems to oppose it.

Dc And PBKS Owners Favour Mega Auction

As per Cricbuzz, The PBKS owners argued with kkr owner over mega auction and reshuffling of players. The PBks owner had the support of DC owner Parth Jindal as both are in favour of mega action in the upcoming IPL auction

Mr. Jindal said “Some people said that there should not be a mega auction at all. There should be only smaller auctions. I’m not in that camp. I feel that it evens the playing field and it’s very good for everyone.” Besides, Mr. Jindal also opposed the Impact Player rule.

IPL Governing Council To Decide Player Regulations

The BCCI released an official statement after the end of the meeting stating that feedback and suggestions of the franchise owner would be placed before the IPL governing council “for further deliberation and evaluation before formulating the IPL player regulations.”

Franchise Owner Not Happy with Overseas Players’ Pull-Off

Cricbuzz reports that almost all the franchise owners showed displeasure over certain foreign players pulling off the tournament despite being picked up by the franchises. The franchise owners emphasized the BCCI to look into the matter and sort it out.

Besides, the owners are also not happy with players not signing up for the mega auction but for the mini-auction where the prices are inflated.

The report further says the matter of uncapped players picked up for low prices is left for the BCCI to give any verdict in the matter.

Uncapped Players Might Have Dedicated Retention Slots

In the upcoming meeting, it is expected that the teams might be allowed to have 2-3 uncapped players with separate retention slots. If it happens it will be the first time in IPL history that separate retention slots are allotted to uncapped players.

Earlier it was reported that the impact rule may be discontinued but the Times of India reported that the impact player rule is going to stay.

Fate Of Impact Rule

Cricbuzz reports that the fate of the impact player rule is going to be discussed in the upcoming meeting. Players and Franchises at large are not in favour of the rule but the broadcasters are in favour of the rule.

RTM Rule Could Be Off the Table

The salary cap increase is on the agenda of the upcoming meeting. There is a possibility that the retention rule for each team could not be more than 5 players a team. BCCI does not want more than 5 retentions as it will diminish the popularity of the IPL.

Reports: RTM option could be off the table, 5-6 retentions likely

Cricbuzz reported last week that in addition to the increased salary cap, the number of retentions for each team could be five or six players. The BCCI is reportedly not in favour of the eight retention policy as they feel too many star players would be taken out of the auction pool, making the event lacklustre.

RTM is an allowance for the franchises to buy a player that player for the same franchise in the last season if the franchise matches the highest bid.

The rule was not allowed in the 2021 auction of the IPL to allow new teams like Gujrat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants to have large player pools.

New Salary Cap

The Cricbuzz report reveals that the salary cap for the upcoming season might be set at INR 120 crore compared to INR 100 crore in 2023 for each franchise.

It means that the top retained players from each team will get around INR 20 crore. However, it is not clear yet as the BCCI will have the final say in the matter.
