Yesterday’s match between Oman and Namibia in Barbados went to the wire and was decided in the super over. David Wiese was the star of the match picking three wickets and being brilliant with the bat in the super over. Namibia scored 20 runs in the super over and defended it to start their World Cup campaign with a thrilling win.
Super over
David Wiese’s 9 off 8 balls tied the match leading to a super over. Wiese opened with Erasmus in the super over. Pacer Bilal Khan started with a wide Yorker which was cut behind point by Wiese for a four. Next ball full-toss disappeared over long-on for a huge six. The last two of the overs saw two fours of the bat of the bat of Erasmus.
After striking at more than 100, Wiese was excellent with the bowl. He bowled the super over, got the important wicket of Naseem Khushi, and defended 21 runs. Oman couldn’t do much about his Yorkers and change of pace deliveries. Oman ended up scoring 10 runs of Wiese’s over.
Oman’s Inning
Powerplay (5x4s, 0x6s)
Ruben Trumpelmann of Namibia bowled two full swinging deliveries and trapped Kashyap Prajapati and captain Aqib Ilyas in front of the wickets.
In his second over he got the important wicket of hard-hitting Naseem Kushi as Naseem scooped one to Gerhard Erasmus at mid-off.
Zeeshan Maqsood came at no.4 and showed some intent in the powerplay by hitting four 4s to give some reprieve to his team.
Middle Innings – Oman kept struggling (1x4s, 1x6s)
Oman just couldn’t recover from the sluggish start in the powerplay and kept struggling in the middle overs as well.
Left-arm spinner Bernard Sholtz bowled tight lines and was rewarded with the wicket of Maqsood, leg before wicket in the 7th over.
Khalid Kail and Ayaan did some sort of consolidation until the 12th over when Ayaan got out to Erasmus. It was a flop batting show in the middle phase with 1 six and 2 fours only.
Death Overs- Oman Set a Low Total (3x4s, 1x6s)
Oman was supposed to tee off in death overs but it wasn’t the case. Muhammad Nadeem was trapped lbw. Khalid Kail tried to accelerate by hitting a six of Wiese but got out the next ball, caught and bowled. Wiese got Mehran Lbw in the same over.
There was no acceleration for Oman as Trupelmann for his last over and finished his spell with career-best figures of 4 for 21. Wiese picked up his 3rd wicket and Oman finished scoring 109 runs.
Namibia’s Innings
PowerPlay: A Steady Start (5x4s, 0x6s)
Michael Van chopped the second ball of the 2nd innings from Bilal onto the stumps. Niklass Davin and Jan Frylinck steadied the ship but the pitch had something for the spinners.
Middle-Overs: Oman Put on A brilliant bowling display (3x4s, 1x6s)
Davin trying to accelerate, hit off-spinner Ilyas for a six over long on. Repeating the same shot, Davin mis-hit the ball and got out the next ball. Oman’s skipper made use of the spinning condition and brought left-arm spinner Zeeshan into the attack.
Frylinck and Erasmus partnered to slowly tick the scoreboard but the left-arm spin of Ayaan broke the stand in the 15th over.
Erasmus sank to the pressure of Oman’s spinners and scooped one to wide long-on. Now Namibia was highly relying on Frylinck.
Death Overs: (3x4s, 1x6s)
Namibia needed 32 runs off 30 balls in the death overs. It is an easy equation in a T20 game but that was not the case.
After, 18 overs the equation stood at 14 off 12 balls, as JJ Smit fell to pacer Mehran. Wiese came in next.
In 19th over Wiese deposited a big six into the stand of the bowling of Bilal. Bilal made a brilliant comeback and gave only 3 runs in the rest of the over. Mehran had 5 runs to defend in the final over of the match. Fans from both sides were on the edges of their seats.
The last over began with Frylinck trapped in front of the wicket, trying to play a cheeky shot towards fine leg. Zane Green got dismissed after two balls.
Luckily for Namibia, Wiese got the strike. 2 was required off 1 ball. Mehran came charging in and beat Wiese’s bat but the wicketkeeper fumbled and the batters scrambled for a single thus taking the match into the super over.
David Wiese came good in the super over both with the ball and bat and got his team over the victory line.
